Please read this technical note carefully.
The purpose of this technical note is to learn how to boot up Daybook Server in case of the system is set up to Backup file automatically using 4D backup and mandatory log file option on. When Daybook Server crashes please follow the steps below
Step 1. First step would be to make a note of the error messages (if any), time and date on the server.
Step 2. As we know most of the times Daybook crashes because it is out of memory so best is to restart the whole machine. If server is running MAC OS 9.x OS than press 4 keys Command+Options+P+R just before the machine reboots in order to zap the PRAM
Step 3. As soon as machine is up and running it will prompt you to enter login details in order to connect to Network.
Note: Please contact your system administrator not Daybook Ltd. if you don’t know the Login ID and password
Step 4. Drag the compiled structure file that is in the "Live Daybook" directory and drop on the "4d server" shortcut.
This should boot up the server unless there was data loss while crash. In the first case check backup checkbox is checked, Backup time is 10:00:00pm not 10:00:00am and now check if users can log in OK as your server is up and running. In the later case please go to next step.
Step 5. If server is not booting up most common error we get is "Log file contains some data that was not saved in data file". After that system won't reboot even though we try again and again Step 6. Close all applications running on the machine. Go to "4D backup" application by clicking on a shortcut in "Live Daybook" directory.
Step 7. Click on "Restore Log" button. Select "Compiled structure file" from "Live Daybook" directory when prompted. If prompted than select Log file from "Live Daybook" directory.
Step 8. Once the log file is opened than click on the little triangle button on the bottom left hand side of the window in front of you. Scroll right down the list of transactions. There will be some transactions displayed in bold. Highlight the last transaction at the bottom from the list and click on "integrate" button on the top
Step 9. Please wait until bold the entries become faded like others. Quit 4d Backup application when finished.
Step 10. Repeat Step 4. If prompted to select the log file select the correct log file from "Live Daybook" directory. Server should be up and running now otherwise follow next step.
Step 11. If system is still giving errors related to log file before booting up than you have to create new log file. In order to create a new log file you have to backup your system.
Step 12. Repeat Step 6 and click on "Full backup" than click on the button "Backup". It will take approx. 2 minutes to backup and after that follow step 4. When prompted for log file click on "New" button and save new log file in the "Live Daybook" directory. Server should be up and running now otherwise call Daybook Ltd.
Some of the terms in this technical note and their meaning:
Daybook Server - Daybook database server application running on G4 upstairs. Daybook Client - Any other machine/User connected to Daybook server to access data Live Daybook - This is a directory on the Daybook server machine. All the current Daybook files are in this directory. Path to this directory is Compiled structure file - This file is present in the “Live directory” which runs the Daybook code. Kind is compiled structure and it is approx. 40-60MB Data file - This file is the most important file and holds all the data. Kind is "data" and it’s a very large in size Log File - This is a file in “Live Daybook” directory that keeps a record of everything that has been added, modified or deleted from Daybook. Note Log file is in the middle of the “Compiled structure” file and “Data file”, So log file will have the most up to date data even before Data gets saved in the data file. Backup - It is a system or a set up that transfers the necessary Daybook system files to a safe place like Data file, Compiled Structure File and Log file. So that in case of Server machine crashes and loses the files those files can be recovered quickly. For example Hard Drive crashes and loses all files. Network Volume - It is a designated partition of HDD on a remote computer connected over the network to share/store backups, data, files, etc. and it may be password protected. If you want detailed information about the backup and Daybook system set up than please read the advanced 4d Backup tech.
