Daybook announces Enterprise 6.3

Daybook has announced Enterprise 6.3, sporting an improved user interface and greater technical robustness.

With 6.3 Daybook has ended its reliance on the AreaList plugin from Automated Solutions Group. This was formerly used in many parts of the system to display lists of related records. The multipurpose area at the bottom of the Companies screen was one example, as were the Order Items area on Sales Orders and Job Stages in a Job screen.

AreaList has been part of the Enterprise and Modulus systems for many years and it has served us very well. However, as a third-party product it also introduced some technical and interface difficulties and made supporting the software that much harder. as such, we have felt for some time that it would be in the overall best interests of our clients to remove it. We are sure that users will be very happy with the new improved interface."

Enterprise 6.2 users will be able to upgrade to 6.3 free of charge when it is released later this year.

Joan wins prize for her intelligence

A chatty girl in her mid-20 scooped the prestigious Loebner prize on Sunday 17th September, in London. Called Joan, her conversation veers on the strange side, for she is a chatterbot and the prize she won was for Artificial Intelligence.

Designed by Rollo Carpenter, whose skills lie behind much of Daybook's software, including Daybook Enterprise, WebImpetus and the online content management system Caliban, Joan is an "avatar", a humanlike face to a computer programme, and convinced the judges that she was most like a human being.

Rollo Carpenter in the news again

It certainly provided a fillip to liven up the tail-end of summer: Daybook's software 'visionary' Rollo Carpenter suddenly cropped up in the news when his chatbot George featured at a technology exhibition in Norwich. George is a creation of his artificial intelligence (AI) programme Jabberwacky, currently considered the most humanlike AI on Earth, as the holder of the prestigious Loebner Prize.

Rollo and George featured on the BBC News At Ten, George was interviewed live on Radio 1 and by The Times and pieces appeared in several of the nationals. Even The Times of India latched onto it.

Rollo was responsible for the concept and much of the development behind Daybook's Enterprise 6 business management system and its web content management system WebImpetus.

You can have a chat with George yourself at http://www.jabberwacky.com.
